5 Steps to Get Financial Aid
10 Smart Ways to Pay for College
1. Don鈥檛 let the sticker price scare you. Most students don鈥檛 pay the full published cost of tuition. Your real cost (net price) is what鈥檚 left after grants and scholarships are applied.
2. Start with the FAFSA even if you鈥檙e unsure. It鈥檚 the first step to unlocking financial aid. Many students qualify for more than they expect.
3. Focus on 鈥渇ree money鈥 first. Grants and scholarships reduce your cost and don鈥檛 have to be repaid.
4. Understand your financial aid offer. Your aid package may include:
- Free money (grants & scholarships)
- Earned money (work-study)
- Optional money (loans).
Take time to understand each piece before making decisions.
5. Use a payment plan to make costs manageable. You don鈥檛 have to pay everything at once. Payment plans let you spread costs over time with no interest, making payments more manageable.
6. Work while you learn. Federal Work Study or part-time jobs can help cover everyday expenses without adding to your debt.
7. Borrow only what you need. Loans are optional. If you borrow, start small and understand how repayment and interest work.
8. Take a full course load (when you can). Flat-rate tuition means 12鈥18 credits can help you graduate on time at the same cost.
9. Apply and plan early. Early action can mean smaller monthly payments and more aid opportunities.
10. Talk to someone. You don鈥檛 have to figure it out alone. Financial aid counselors and student services staff can help you create a plan that fits your situation. Prefer Spanish? We can explain your offer letter in Spanish 鈥 just ask.
